Some frost in cold weather is normal, and the defrost cycle is designed to clear it automatically. What is not normal is ice that builds up and stays, or a unit encased in ice. That points to a defrost control problem, a refrigerant issue, or restricted airflow, and running the system in that condition can damage the compressor. Turn it off and call us.
In many cases yes, and that is part of what makes a ducted heat pump straightforward to install in a home that already has a central system. We evaluate the existing duct system during the in-home assessment, because ductwork that is undersized, leaking, or poorly laid out will limit a new system no matter how good the equipment is. If we find problems, we tell you before installation rather than after.
That is expected behavior rather than a fault. A furnace produces short bursts of very hot air, while a heat pump moves a larger volume of moderately warm air over longer cycles. The room reaches the same temperature, but the air coming out of the register feels less hot to the hand. If the air is genuinely cold rather than mildly warm, that is a different problem and worth a service call.
